Today the infamous President of the Republic of the Philippines signed into law the raising of the age of consent from 12 years of age to 16 years of age.
Finally, sex with kids under 16 in the Philippines is rape.
“Various studies have proven that the rational part of a person’s brain – the parts that respond to situations with sound judgment – will not fully develop until age 25,” the Child Rights Network said.
“This will not be enough to protect children. The Philippines legal system must start legitimately charging and convicting rapists, something it currently fails to do,” said Katie Alsop, Executive Director of The RINJ Foundation.

According to RINJ’s Sharon Santiago, some ten million Filipino moms work as Overseas Foreign Workers (OFW) and their children are not cared for at home, in fact, she notes, “the children are being raped at home in the Philippines while the moms are putting up with sexual abuse in other countries as domestic workers”. According to a RINJ Foundation straw poll, some 80% or more children in the Philippines are subjected to rape, sexual assault or sexual harassment.
