On August 17, 2012, RINJ Hall Of Honour Judge Marielsa A. Bernard of Montgomery County District Court, Maryland USA, sentenced Asturizaga to more than 128 years in prison.

Maybe after he has exhausted his appeals (most recent 4/4/2014 ) this man will find it in his cold heart to give the family of Alison Thresher some closure and explain where he hid the remains of the victim’s mother, the woman he is suspected of killing, Allison Thresher.

Asturizaga A Rapist and Pedofile Is Also A Murder Suspect

RINJ Foundation journalists have a suspicion that  Asturizaga may have been involved in the disappearance of Alison Thresher, a Bethesda woman missing since May 23, 2000, which disappearance local Montgomery County police have decided was a homicide. A team from The RINJ Foundation has followed this case closely and gained access to Asturizaga.

RINJ Foundation has learned that on January 23, 2001 Montgomery County Court was asked to declare the missing mother of Asturizaga’s victim, dead.

A Vulnerable Thresher Family Falls Victim to A Monster

At the request of the former husband of the Bethesda resident, missing since May 23, 2001,  a Montgomery County Judge declared Ms. Thresher dead. A legal finding that Alison Thresher was dead allowed her two children to collect something like $1,800 a month in Social Security survivor benefits, advanced her former husband, James M. Thresher.

Alison Thresher (46) who was a copy editor for the Washington Post, was last seen May 23, 2000. We are certain she was seen in the company of Asturizaga repeatedly.

James M. Thresher, a photographer at The Washington Post, filed a petition Nov. 14 2001 seeking a death certificate for his former wife.

At the material time of her disappearance, some action of Alison Thresher effectively ended a “romantic” sexual relationship between Asturizaga  and a 10/11-year-old daughter of  Alison Thresher.

Asturizaga  was both a “baby-sitter” and a “teacher” of the child since 1999 while the family endured a matrimonial crisis and a certain period of vulnerability.

Statements made by the parties and by witnesses suggest that there may have been a confrontation between Ms. Thresher and Asturizaga and that Thresher was in the process of contacting police when Thresher vanished. A highly publicized and extensive search for her made the local and national news.

Sarah Goodwin Thomas, the sister of Alison Thresher spent many hard weeks looking through the life of her sister trying to figure out what happened. Her loss is without closure.

Allison Goodwin Thresher grew up in Wichita, Kansas.  “She loved to read and was constantly writing little short stories and poems,” says her sister.

Ms. Thresher had attended the highly regarded Hyde Magnet Elementary School in Wichita. That school’s library now has eighty-seven new books, purchased with funds raised by the  Alison Thresher Memorial Fund which was created by a group of friends and family who dearly loved Ms. Thresher, led by a personal friend,  Scott Oatsdean. Suspicious Person Seen With The Deceased Looks Like  Fernando Asturizaga

Meanwhile Montgomery County police were at one point looking for an unidentified man who was seen with Alison Thresher in the weeks of spring 2000 before the Bethesda woman disappeared. Described by police at the time as a man being 5 feet 4 inches tall, 48 to 50 years of age and of medium build, “possibly of Hispanic descent” was seen with Thresher in March or early April at her Sumner Highlands apartment complex on Sangamore Road.

Neighbours told police the man was clean shaven with thick, black hair.

Notwithstanding the age correction (Asturizaga  looks older than his years.) that description fits Fernando Asturizaga exactly.

In the late spring of 2000, police searched the tangled under brush around the Brookmont neighborhood where Thresher’s car was found late May 2000.Divers probed portions of the nearby C&O Canal and an adjacent viaduct.

In early June, 2000, 15 teams of dogs and their handlers combed the eastern bank of the Potomac River for 2 1/2 miles in both directions from the District-Maryland line, looking for clues to the disappearance of Alison Thresher.

Thresher had dinner with her parents during in the evening of May 23, 2000 in her hometown of Bethesda, Maryland. She returned to Sumner Highlands Apartments in the on Sangamore Road later in the night. Thresher spoke to an acquaintance by phone at approximately 10:00 p.m. and emailed her employer at midnight. She vanished thereafter. Thresher was scheduled to begin a new position as a copy editor for The Washington Post‘s Web site the day she went missing.

Thresher’s copper-coloured ’97 Volvo wagon was found on May 25, one day after her apparent disappearance. The vehicle was stopped on the corner of Ridge Drive and Broad Street near the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal in the Glen Echo area several miles from her apartment. There was no sign of her at the scene and an extensive search of the surrounding area produced no clues as to Thresher’s whereabouts. Her wallet and keys were not discovered inside her car.

Authorities have stated that evidence related to her disappearance had been recovered and pointed towards foul play, but no other details have been publicized.

Who Is Fernando Asturizaga?

“He was a Coordinator of Resident Life at New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier Vermont. He was there for 3 or 4 years. He came there originally as a student and worked at NECI’s Main Street Grill restaurant before becoming an RA.”  – source

Asturizaga was a Spanish language teacher at the Friends Community School in College Park when he first met the very corageous survivor who brought him successfully to trial and conviction. What an ordeal this must have been for her. [ ed. note: Our hearts break repeatedly as we learned in some depth what this person of such extraordinary fortitude must have suffered through. ]

Fernando Asturizaga is a quiet, hard-working male person who when engaged beyond superficial greetings; beyond his quick, often-fake smile; and beyond his awkward small talk, is shallow and without real empathy. He holds out to be an excellent artist and in jail spent time teaching teen inmates how to draw. He speaks affectionately about his youthful students.

While in a high security jail for nearly two years now, Asturizaga works hard as an inmate “trustee” or ‘inmate worker’ with extra priviledges including ‘outside’ contact. He voluntarily participates in a Moral Reconation Therapy programme which allows inmates special privileges and freedoms. He seeks and succeeds in to gaining recognition, support and respect of Corrections Officers and jail officials.

In his life he has worked as a “teacher”, a cook, waiter, chef and more.

Oddly he is a man filled with rage. He speaks softly about children and about his crime which he describes as a “love affair” but he is enraged at those who are not accepting of his conduct. He was convinced that he would again leave court a free man on February 17, 2012 just as he had done in Circuit Court for Prince George’s County on July 17, 2003 when he was acquitted of six counts of sexual assault; one count of assault and one count of child abuse.

Talk about his crime brings him to the brink of angry explosion in a second. He has a dark secret, but that secret is not his lover whom he is willing to talk about in scant detail.

Fernando Asturizaga is a pedophile as sure as God made little apples. His illness is apparently not known to him consequently his understanding of why people are reviled by his actions is a mystery he cannot comprehend. He sees his involvement with his crime “victims” as genuine love and care. He is enraged that anyone would question his love for the rape survivor who courageously brought him to justice. He says that he (paraphrased) ‘treated [her] with love, respect, dignity, generosity and with gentleness’. He doesn’t get it. This was a ten year old child with busy parents who had become estranged during a typical  matrimonial crisis that caused an ordinary, modern, urban family to become vulnerable to a monster.

The then-child rape survivor was receiving love from Asturizaga  and maybe she needed that, like all kids do, therefore she, inasmuch as a ten year old could do so, consented and participated in a so-called “relationship”. Noted one observer, “Perhaps that explains in a nutshell the vulnerability of all children in so many typical situations where care for kids is diluted by the myriad of things families must do to survive the modern pressures of life.”

There is nothing that mitigates this crime.

Moreover there are factors that suggest Asturizaga is an extremely dangerous offender and should be limited in his contact with society from behind bars. He will continue his mission of rage and strike out at his detractors by any means.

Global society needs to deal with pedophillia differently because the offenders are incurable and will re-offend...”  – Discussion Paper:  Pedophilia or Statutory Rape

Because of his pedofile’s proclivity to rape and to extreme violence The RINJ Foundation has identified Asturizaga  is a “Monster”.
